When we are born, we receive a date, time and place of birth. This information is stamped onto a piece of paper and becomes your certificate of birth, an acknowledgement from society that you indeed, exist. We grow up; we experience and eventually - just like everything else - we pass from this reality. At that point, the entity that was is graced with a gravestone, stamped with two dates separated by one tiny little dash. In my youthful naivety I was convinced that what mattered most was the length of time that those two dates represented, yet now, I understand my error.
We are an eventuality of time and as such, time is what we concern ourselves with most. Yet in all its simplicity, the tiny dash that separates the dates on our gravestones is all that matters in the end. That dash represents absolutely everything about our timely existence. It is the dash that summarizes all the good and the bad of the duration of our lives. It is the dash that contains all of our achievements, hopes and dreams. It is the dash that comprehends all of our love, mistakes and retributions. It is the dash that encompasses all you have ever said and more importantly all you have ever done. It is the dash that includes all of who we are and all we ever were.
So then I leave you with this thought; when all is said and done and you step away from the realm of mortality, what will that dash represent about you?
