It's my birthday, so I will buy my cake and eat it!
My birthday is just two days away and I am teeming with excitement, in fact I can't wait. And although it is not a prime number or one divisible by five, which is commonly celebrated, I am celebrating it to the max and reason being…no, I am not dying from a deadly disease or emigrating any time soon…but rather…WHY NOT?!
With our hectic lifestyles and busy work schedules we seldom have quality time to spend with our family and friends. Which is why we need to embrace every opportunity to celebrate our lives and share this with our loved ones. After all, I strongly believe in the philosophy of spreading joy to others in order to reap some for yourself. I have vowed to live my life to the fullest and make every moment matter, therefore I am having several birthday "parties" this year.
To begin, my adoring sons have asked to burn the midnight oil on Thursday, the night before, so that they can welcome in my birthday the very first second, and for this I feel truly blessed! Therefore, we will need a birthday cake, right? But with there being no one else to do this…hold your breath…I AM BUYING MY OWN BIRTHDAY CAKE! Now before you shriek out in disbelief, or burst out laughing, put yourself in my shoes first. Being a single mother, I am not going to wait around for family members or friends to "hopefully" bring a cake along for me. Even though I know I will be inundated with phone calls and well wishes from all over, the traditional cake cutting ritual often gets overlooked, and I will not have the heart to look at my boy's sad faces when there is no cake to cut or candles to blow out! So yes, I am buying my decadent chocolate cake, and I will eat it, with my exuberant sons while dancing to ABBA's "Dancing Queen, young and sweet, only seventeen…"
The celebrations will then continue that morning at work, where I know my ever-loving and solicitous colleagues will shower me with warmth and lots of pressies! I know this because I "caught" them shopping for gifts for me this week, and even though I desperately tried to find out what it was, they scolded me to be more patient till the actual day! And besides, they spoilt me rotten last year, so I am eagerly awaiting same this year…wink wink! We will then break for a delicious lunch at my favorite seafood restaurant, and to much cheerful laughter and banter, I will bid my colleagues farewell as I embark on the next leg of my celebrations.
Brimming with mystery and intrigue, I will then be whisked away by a "special someone" for a romantic evening of which I have little details, but judging from last year I'm waiting with bated breath for him to mollycoddle me with his magic and charm, till the last second of the day the stork delivered me!!
On Saturday I will lunch with my folks and then head off with a few of my closest friends to watch a local theatre production of song and dance while sipping on cocktails and party the night away.
So technically I plan on having a weekend full of celebrations for my birthday, and though some may think this is too indulgent, I shall ignore the pessimists and gleefully prance down the yellow brick road to my birthday...
