I am inclined to think Chrisitano Ronaldo and co are not the only ones seasoned in the art of playing victim on the field of play. Many a person not too far from home claim in one way or another to be a victim to a "system'. Systems don’t make themselves.
We as society make them and institutions such as governments just act to reinforce them. If society is generally corrupt, we breed corruption and governments will just act to reinforce corrupt values in a more public space. If society is discriminatory, what sort of leaders do we expect to churn out?
If society is deemed lazy, do we honestly expect good work ethics and diligence to suddenly fall upon individuals and possess them the moment they are voted into office?
If we supposedly have dumb leaders who are hardly able to tie their own laces, due to 'obstructions' varying in size and shape, what does that say about the rock they are hewn from?
I know there be many that are too righteous to be associated with this or that but maybe that's just the problem. If we're too quick to distance ourselves from the reality others live with, because it's not smacking us in the face daily, then why complain when our leaders build forts to shield their eyes from our everyday realities?
"This is not some national road in Malawi....We must not think like Africans in Africa generally think..."
"Arrogant prick!" many may have thought, but how often do we as ordinary everyday people say derogatory things about people of other nationalities, races, religious affiliation or other countries? Does it make it any less hurtful that we don't have national media publishing our every statement, ill thought out or otherwise.
In that same room were those words were said, there was applause and oh yes, there was a great deal of amusement too from the audience. We made them, we live them, unless we're willing to make them differently starting now!
