JZ’s Spear on SA’s lips

24 May 2012, 11:42

JZ’s Spear on SA’s lips

It’s been a very interesting week watching the spectacle created by Brett Murray’s painting of our questionably-honorable president and his penis, with the current climax being the defacement of said painting.

Who would have thought JZ’s junk could cause so much drama in our little corner of Africa or the world for that matter. From the first murmurings about some random painting about a week ago, to the full blown national debate this has become…. JZ’s penis is clearly the biggest thing in SA at the moment.

We have churches calling for the stoning of the artist. How very 21st century and Christian of these folks. Then there are the commies and ANC who have turned their backs on one of the very foundations of our constitution for which their ancestors and they (or so they claim) had fought so dearly for. Even ol’ JZ’s family has voiced their concerns over his dong going viral. But then again, I’m pretty sure it was viral before now.

The hype though has left me totally confused as to what the big deal is. This is not the first time that JZ has been depicted in a painting with his weener hanging out. The
first instance included the Arch’s jewels on display as well, but I don’t recall there being this much hype. I would hope that our nation is not so fickle to have discounted the previous instance due to the artist being black and not white, as is the case with this painting.

I also didn’t see any sexual or offensive references in the painting, and cannot for the life of me understand how it is in anyway more explicit or crude than the numerous instances of mostly nude tribal teenage girls jiggling their bits all over the 8 o’clock news, so cultural conservatism doesn’t strike me as the heart of the offense. For goodness sake, it’s not as if it was even at full mast.

Maybe the Pres is penis shy and views it as untouchable, but that also just doesn’t seem right. Given his numerous wives and sexual partners, I get the feeling that there are potentially more people in SA who had seen Jacob’s junk than people who hadn’t.

Clearly Jacob is upset about the painting, I can empathize. It’s not nice to have someone draw a nasty picture of you, but most of us learnt to get over this by the 7th grade. Maybe this is just one of those life lessons our president wasn’t able to learn yet, due to his absence of school experience. Maybe he should stop watching all his PVR’ed episodes of Isidingo and tune into just one episode of South Park, for a taste of how far freedom of expression can really go. Brett’s painting really is just the tip of how far we could go with this Right.

All things considered, Jacob and his china’s need to put on their big boy brooks, put away their egos and get on with running the country. Jacob’s penis has been a on the lips of too many South African for far too long now. It’s time for the Pres to swallow his pride and get on with captaining the ship.

The painting has however been a masterpiece in demonstrating how selective our morals can be. My only real complaint about the whole thing? Given that JZ is practically a porn star, I thought his junk would be bigger.

What do you think though
; no such as thing as bad publicity or is this political masturbation (self satisfying but a waste of time and money)?
