Another day done, I thought to myself as the winter sun disappeared behind the Chatsworth and Lamontville hills.
I'm on the N2 northbound just before the Higginson Highway when suddenly the vehicle in front of me slams on brakes.
I am a bit annoyed by this considering my 1800cc motor will have to battle it out again all the way up to 120 km/h. It is at this moment that I see a bag on the middle lane, some fruits on the fast lane and inevitably a lifeless body of a man on the yellow lane.
I looked at his face and I was confronted by the stare of death. Of course a badly damaged V.W. Polo a few meters away from the body and to accompany it, a traumatized driver.
The gory scene does not register to me as I drive pass, annoyed by rubbernecking "idiots" that are contributing to the reason why I have to replace brakes so often. Another kilometre of driving and it dawns, somebody just died!
Someone out there is waiting for him to come home and this will never be. I trembled as my heart thumped through my rib cage. After this, you can imagine what a flying pass plastic bag did to me, or should I say my brakes!
As I continue on my disturbed journey home up the M13 on Fields Hill, a few women are getting ready to cross the trio of congested lanes, with the fastest at 100 km/h. At this instance, I want to roll down my window and shout a few French words to drill some sense, hopefully paint a picture of what I just saw a quarter of an hour ago.
But then, this would be inappropriate. These are old people. Just before seven days could pass, up the M13, a silver foil, a pedestrian, a petrified driver, blue lights and immune cops who are just bored with this looping movie.
To top it all, the pedestrian bridge is only a midget distance away. I could not pin it, why? Why take a shot at death like this?
Now, I am certain that I shall pass the camera on top of the Kloof pedestrian bridge in due time, with its eye focused on my rear end. An idea comes to mind, why not take the picture of the suicidal before he takes the all damning plunge?
Why not save a life, arrest someone! Give the guy behind the wheel a break, try the chap in front of the wheels for a change!
