Approximately 3 years ago I considered myself lucky to be selected as one of the incumbents for a leadership programme with one of the biggest companies in the face of the new world order within the business sector, for me and many others it signified new and humble beginnings which were sure to be preceded by great and prosperous careers in our field of choice.
It stood to offer us the opportunity to finally realise our long standing strungle to be called graduates with some exceptional number of years of on the job working experience, atleast that was the original idea sold to us when we were first offered these breath taking opportunity.
Although all of these has since come to being it still puzzles me that goverment still comes up with half baked ideas given all the expertise and resouces it possesses, the level of monitoring exerted on these programmes leaves much to be desired companies offering these learnerships are left to their own aid without much intervention from the goverment bodies that are meant to guide and ensure fairness and well being of both parties, futher more little or no backround check seems to be conducted on the company appointed to facilitate the study programme.
As for the ligitimacy of the qualification thereof the are still some unanswered questions, such as are these qualifications recognised by the South African higher institutions; the study programme offered is it the same quality as given by the South African universities, and if yes does these give me as a product of a learnership programme a competitive edge out there the factor market.
A lot still needs to be achieved in order for the youth of S.A to have a positive impact on the economic well being of the country and if leanership programmes are to be considered as one of the key elements to achieving economic freedom and stability in the skills development sector, then better monitoring systems, more rigid compliance structures and goverment intervention needs to be apparent.
