In the absence of a clear and CONSISTENT economic policy, the ANC has resorted to changing the strategy 5 times since 2008 alone. As always, the problem in South Africa is not so much in the strategy but in the lack of clear implementation and consistent checking for compliance and management.
So, now we sit with a situation where Zwelenzima Vavi is actually saying that the last economic policy of Thabo Mbeki (some might call him his arch nemesis for his pro-business stance, that being the policy of GEAR) was perhaps the right policy for South Africa after all.
I said it then and my words have come to pass - when all and sundry were baying for Mbeki's blood, I cautioned that we would YET come to miss him - and here we are with "our dear leader" oops, I mean Mr. Zuma running this country as if it were his personal fiefdom, record levels of unemployment, all but zero growth in the economy and (depending on who you believe) 25-30% unemployment in the richest, most organised country in Africa, according to Time magazine.
I'm afraid it's become time to ask: When all is said and done, just why is Africa, so incapable...of running Africa?
