Let's have a rugby referee try a soccer match

03 July 2014, 10:33
Before you think that this is about to be a rant about what a bunch of actors football/soccer players are - hear me out.

So I am reading the IRB's web about how many laws there are in rugby. Im cross-eyed by page 2 of 6 and have counted 36 rules.

Soccer? 17.

In fact it has to be one of the least rule-full games on the planet- beaten by ball-in-a-cup and skipping.
My point is this: out of politeness I have been forced to watch some of this mind numbing (sometimes brilliant) FIFA WC and each time I get struck by two things.

1) The refs all seem like crazy schoolteachers trying to herd a group of ADHD children in a Moroccan market bazaar. They know the rules, the players know the rules but all of the players pretend that they dont.

2) The players cry and cringe and whine and bleat and roll etc etc (add your own) when they arent touched. Besides 7 year old girls calling them pussies, when they do this and apologize about it - a la Arjen Robben its a slap to everyone.

What I cant understand is why they roll around and make a joke of themselves when they know that THE WHOLE WORLD can see that they are faking.. Slow mo.. What a thing.

Its like they are telling the rest of us that they dont respect themselves, the players, the game or the fans. Ridiculous.

This crazy yellow card fever is batshit- in soccer if you take off your shirt you get a yellow card- in rugby its because you hit someone so hard that it disintegrated a la Jean Deysel.

So what to do?
Why not have a rugby ref go and ref a game- we know that any sports fan can pick the rules up in a few minutes. There are only 17 of them.

How would the players reACT with Steve Walsh or Craig Joubert were on the field?

A few yellow cards and a ref that respects himself might just be a game changer that makes sense.

Jas Sayin.
