Let's save the environment

26 May 2014, 17:30
Dear fellow citizens of planet Earth.
Let's spare a thought for our environment.
Our economy is growing, but our environment is dying a slow painful death.
The clouds around us are no longer a promise of rain,
But a poisonous concoction of gases from our industries and refineries.
Look  at Beijing, China, the city is constantly covered with a cloud of smoke.
It's like the Chinese are hiding away from American satellites orbiting above them.
Yet we adore them, the worlds largest economy.

Our lakes, rivers and oceans have turned into waste dumps
Every day we pump out our waste saturating the waters with pollutants,
Then the next day set sail to fish, hoping to return with a big catch.
Only to return with empty vessels, driven back by the stench of rotting fish.
Our heads are just empty vessels that don't think of the consequences of our actions

We have the sun, water and wind as free sources of energy
But we call them expensive and settle for the dangerous.
We farm the ocean floor for oil, dig the earth for coal, gas and uranium,
To fuel our greed for energy.
We never learn form our mistakes.
Hiroshima, Piper Alpha, Chernobyl and Fukushima, what is next?
Or should I say, Where will the next Red Forest be?
The next evacuation or the next oil-spill clean up?

The Amazon rainforest is disappearing, Athabasca glacier melting.
Birds of the ocean are choking, birds in the sky also choking.
Fish is dying, the sea is polluted and the atmosphere asphyxiating.
We have personal relationships with our doctors, because we are constantly ill,
But that is not warning enough to make us act.
We live like we have no children
Leave the next generation with a burden of nuclear waste
Deny them the opportunity to walk at the beach
And take away their clear blue skies.

Even the environmental groups are just like us,
They call on the leaders of the world to stop emissions
We gather, listen, donate, join their cause and sing their song,
And they drive away to their next recruitment station
Guess what they drive? Turbocharged, V8, diesel fueled SUV's.
What a gospel they preach?
Dear fellow citizens of planet Earth.
Let's spare a thought for our environment.
