Let's talk about domestic abuse

19 February 2013, 07:44
Just a few days ago I was reading Nicholas Sparks highly recommended novel "Safe Haven". It centres around a woman stuck in an abusive relationship.

As I turned the pages I remembered my own experiences with my so called first love years ago at the tender age of 18.

Back then I believed it was okay for a guy to mistreat a woman and I seamlessly allowed the mistreatment to continue. Until one day when he became so possessive and threw me down a flight of stairs.

I promised myself that I would never go back to him after that. But like all modern day "fairy tales" I believed he would change.

It took a hell of a lot of convincing and tears to finally free myself from his grip. Many of you reading this would think that my ex was some sort of low class thug , but quite the opposite in fact.

He was a law student and years later I would find out that he did the same with another girl.

Whether or not Oscar murdered Reeva or not this is a conversation that needs to be engaged.

We need to educate our daughters and even our sons that control and possessive behaviour does not equate love. We need to make people aware of the dangers of criminal thought.

For the sake of your daughters and the sake of your sons build a firm foundation. I hope that this article will serve not as a call of judgement but as a conversation that will help us see the true dangers of control
