Dear Editor,
So in a non-surprise pending visit, the ANCYL - with the full blessing of the ANC of course - will be conducting a tour of Venezuela shortly.
Their mission: To “study” the Venezuelan nationalisation programme.
In January 2007 when the Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez announced his aggressive plans to nationalise every major industry in the country, global investors raced to sell off their Venezuelan stocks. President Chavez had singled out certain “strategic sectors” for nationalisation.
At the time, US White House press secretary Tony Snow also weighed in, saying: "Nationalisation has a long and inglorious history of failure around the world. We support the Venezuelan people and think this is an unhappy day for them."
What’s laughable about the ANCYL fact finding expedition to Venezuela is the fact that Venezuela is not a country that is ruled by its original native population. Indeed the country, once colonised by the Spanish who then decimated the local tribes and introduced slave labour from both local natives as well as Africa, is currently ruled by Europeans/Spanish descendents.
So in short, the ANCYL has organised a paid for holiday trip for their top buddies in the league, to visit a country which their European ancestors devastated and exploited for their own gain, at the expense of the native tribes who were/are the rightful owners of the land.
In the South Africa context, that would be the same as the Dutch/European settlers taking over and then nationalising all the major industries for the government’s own greedy gains, and then having the ANCYL support them and want to learn from them. LOL @ the ANCYL!
I’d like to do my part for our country and suggest that the ANCYL save their money (who’s paying for this holiday anyway?) and rather invest it back into the lives of poor and needy South Africans who will benefit more from having food on their tables, than some pointless ANCYL vacation to a country whose own history and governance principles are in question.
