Dear Editor,
Aren't people supposed to be happy about attending an arts festival? I am talking in particular about the recent Aardklop festival held in Potchefstroom.
People got in their cars and they drove there to have fun, appreciate amazing art and the best theatre productions - right?
Well, the number of senseless fistfights clearly - and sadly - proves that notion wrong. Afrikaners are not all "plesierig". Some of them like to beat each other to pieces for no apparent reason. And that at a festival celebrating our wonderful culture and appreciating the artistically talented ones amongst us.
On Monday, an Egoli actor was apparently attacked by the jealous boyfriend of a girl who came to introduce herself to him. Two other Afrikaans singers were dragged into the whole unpleasant event and got their share of what was then a brawl outside Bourbon Street.
The same night a newspaper photographer went home with two blue eyes after five "rugby players" attacked him. He said they didn't like his 'Son' shirt.
Later in the week a 21-year old guy was assaulted so badly in a public area that people thought he was about to die. There was blood all over and what probably saved him was the fact that a man started taking pictures and caused the aggressors to flee.
This is our nation we are talking about. People who are privileged enough to go to Aardklop for a week. To have fun, appreciate amazing art and theatre productions?
Lila,
Aardklop fan
