Dear Editor,
I hope beyond hope that FIFA will ban the use of Vuvuzelas at the World Cup. I have been to many games where these "instruments" have been blown. The noise is incessant and unpleasant.
The users, at least the ones who were behind me, in front of me and on both sides of me, had no sense of decorum.
The infernal instrument was blown in my ear and my pleas for it to stop or to at least be re-directed fell on deaf ears (probably because the users themselves are probably by now hearing impaired).
Other than the actual noise and the possible damage to one's hearing, the Vuvuzela gets cleaned from time to time when the user shakes the Vuvuzela resulting in a shower of spittle raining on those in front of the offending party. I suggest to you that it's a perfect way of spreading disease.
I find comments about this being a truly African experience condescending and patronising - some factory in China is probably producing the blasted instrument.
I'd rather have Marimba bands or instruments being played in the stadia - now that would be make the World Cup a truly African experience.
I left the opening game of the Confed Cup with a throbbing headache and ringing ears and have decided to watch the rest of the games and the World Cup on a big screen near my place.
That way I am saved the absolutely mayhem at the Park and Ride facilities - the one at Wits University being the worst of the lot I'm sure.
Those who espouse the virtues of the Vuvuzela, Blatter et al, watch the game from their air-conditioned suites removed from the stands where the blaring is at its absolute worst.
