Dear Editor,
Blind nepotism will cost South Africa a nation's pride.
I temporarily moved to Saudi Arabia to work at a company where nepotism is rife; it is their way of doing things and is sad to see how this affects their potential. The local people vs expats issue are causing them to lose money.
The management (Saudi's only) put people (their friends) in positions where they cannot contribute to the company's welfare. The situation is pathetic, they need the expats, but they detest them and occasionally get rid of the ones speaking up. Pride and the unwillingness to learn have left them paralysed. Even between the locals a family classification exists, allowing the pool of available candidates to grow very shallow.
All is rendered ineffective due to double standards, lack of discipline and the unfair treatment of the hard workers. Key personnel leave the company for less money but a better work environment. The blind nepotism with all the supplementary unconstructiveness maybe maintains friendships but undermines the company's primary purpose; making money.
My luck is such that I left South Africa to escape such a thing in the first place but I step right into the next evil empire. The problem is South Africa cannot be compared to a small Saudi company, no sir. Whereas the company loses money and maybe an employee or two, South Africa lose people's lives, safety, education, principles and values, money, and the very future of the country!
I fear that all is lost for South Africa, the soul is gone. The generations to come will look back at us and ask why we didn’t fight for what we all know is right. My company will be fixed soon because it is not making money, but why is South Africa still losing all her precious commodities?
