Dear Editor,
The decision by Athletics South Africa in (ASA) to retain chief Leonard Chuene is beyond belief.
It is an insult to our country. How will Chuene be able to attend international meetings without sniggering and finger pointing behind his back? He will be nothing more than the Court Jester in the international circuit… which I wouldn't mind if it wasn’t for the fact that he represents an entire nation; my nation, South Africa.
Yes we may have come to expect poor service, cover ups, high murder rates, ineptitude and corruption in this country, but for the rest of the world, this behavior is not everyday, its an exception to the rule, and that’s exactly what will happen with Chuene; he will be seen as exception to the rule, and South Africa will suffer as a result.
Shame on you Chuene for not falling on your sword, shame on Cabinet for refusing to call for his resignation, despite growing calls for his head after he admitted to lying about gender tests on athlete Caster Semenya.
Lying is not okay, but the ASA seems to think it is. And Chuene said yesterday [after the ASA endorsed him] that he felt vindicated and compared his situation to that of Jacob Zuma [during his rape and corruption trials]...
"I was humiliated, castigated and condemned like the (now) president of this country. The truth has come out. What is it people in athletics are seeing that others can't?"
I think that is exactly the point Chuene, ignorance is bliss.
