Dear Editor,
On Sunday we were lucky enough to be treated to the MPH show at the dome in Johannesburg. The show was excellent and with the help of some earplugs for the kids they even seem to enjoy the pyrotechnics.
At some point I was wondering how much, or rather how little, training would be required by the average Joburg driver to do some of the stunts they were performing. I mean we can all dodge trucks, bicycles, pedestrians and we also try and read the minds of most of our local taxi drivers, and on the whole we do arrive at our destination, mostly only slightly frazzled.
But this is not what this letter is about.
We live in the age of internet technology and as a family we probably use the net more than just the average. This includes the grandparents, who bought the tickets for the show. When booking, sitting comfortably in their lounge in front of the PC, carefully choosing the day and time and seating etc, it ended with a small hitch. You can book and pay for adult tickets, but not for children.
Now I know what you may think, some enterprising genius will book child tickets for adults, but if you go to the booking office, you don't have to pitch up with the kids to prove they exist. The long and short was in order not to lose their choice they booked seven adults instead of four adults and three kids.
You may think this is an isolated incident and not worth worrying about. But even taking the kids to the cinema gets hair rising. We are all movie club members, but my children's friends are not all members. So if I want to treat them as well, I cannot do this from the convenience of my lounge, as alas, I cannot book a child ticket over the internet booking system. I could however use one of those ticket machines at the cinema. Again, I could do this without the kids being present, but not over the net.
I appeal to the powers that be. Imagine this: I have three children, each take a friend, makes six. We arrive at the cinemas, which are usually quite busy. We huddle around the ticket terminal and each one has an opinion about where to sit. So the squabbling goes on, extremely irritating anyone in the queue behind us.
In the name of sanity, someone explain to me why I cannot buy child tickets to shows and cinemas over the internet (with the exception of those specifically aimed at kids)?
Jax
