Does Durban need a new airport

Dear Editor,

I am not sure how many people realise the fight going on with regards to the new Durban Airport?

Here are some quick facts before I start my case:

The new Shaka Zulu Airport will cost R6bn.
It is further outside the CBD then the current airport!
There is no fuel line to the airport like at the current airport, therefore fuel will have to be trucked in on a daily basis at a huge cost to Airlines!
ACSA wants to raise airport taxes by 133% to cover the costs of this project, they want to recoup the money in 3 or so years!
And lastly there is absolutely nothing wrong with the current airport! Nothing!

I fly quite regularly and was this week in Durban. I saw an Emirates Airbus at Durban Airport for the first time, and was thinking surely if one of the best airlines in the world was using our current facilities then what is the problem? Do we really need a new airport?

Those of you who read the Kulula in-flight magazines might have read that their management is up in arms about this new airport! And so they should be! An upgrade to Durban Airport would only cost R1,5bn but now ACSA say no they want a brand new one for R6bn! That's ridiculous and a complete waste of money!

Do we the public have R4,5bn lying around ready to fund another white elephant? Don't even get me started on KZN building a huge stadium right next to Kings Park, one of the best stadiums in the world
