Don't take away our CNN fix

02 April 2003, 12:23

This is the first letter I have written about anything I have read about in the news.

But, I have just read about the SABC deciding to axe CNN and I am totally dismayed, so much so it has brought me out of my shell.

I am not a "news junkie". I am not any kind of junkie, and yet I often wait up at night to catch CNN news before I go to bed.

On the rare nights I can't sleep, it is a consolation that I can, at least, watch CNN.

Light entertainment! We are not so air-headed that we must have a constant diet of light entertainment. Does light entertainment mean more soap operas and sit-coms? Oh no!

Compared to many other countries, the amount of news coverage, especially in any depth, is woefully small in South Africa.

Would like to be better informed

Perhaps this decision is evidence of what some people are calling the "dumbing down" of South African standards. Please let it not be so.

Dear editor of News24, I really appreciate your news service. I read it daily.

And, if you receive other letters such as mine, please let the public know there are people who don't need or want more entertainment on television, but who would like to be better informed than we have been.

I think the suggestion to take a contract with Al-Jazeera is also a poor suggestion in our context. There is no comparison with either CNN or the BBC.
