Evolution 'is a religion'

20 June 2005, 11:12

Dear Editor,

I refer Mr G Claassen's atheistic views in his News24 column of June 17 wherein he mocks the fact that the Bible depicts humans as special and asks how we would react if life were discovered on other planets.

Nasa's Seti (Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence) project performs a targeted search of the heavens with its network of radio telescopes that can scan 28 million radio frequencies per second.

What have they discovered after more than 40 years of listening? Absolutely nothing-not even one 'ET' message. The only ET 'discoverer' was Steven Spielberg.

Many years ago, the very first radio signal was received from space. They called it LGM-1 (Little Green Men-1). It was later discovered that the signal was from a pulsar star, which emits pulses of radio waves.

This simple pulse spelled 'intelligence' to them, yet when they view, under a microscope, the most complex code (DNA) known to man, it spells 'chance' to them.

Bill Gates wrote in his book The Road Ahead: 'Human DNA is like a computer programme, but far far more advanced than any software ever created.'

Yet, evolutionists believe DNA evolved by chance over time.

Can they prove their belief that a cell (life) evolved from chemicals in a primordial soup 4 billion years ago?

All the scientists in the world with the best computers cannot make one living cell from chemicals.

Why? Because to even synthesise just one short protein is mathematically impossible (1 in 10130 yet there is 'only' 1018 seconds in 30 billion years).

Evolution a 'religious belief system'

Evolution is a religious belief system. Famous evolutionist Michael Ruse wrote in the National Post: 'Evolution is promulgated as an ideology, a secular religion, a fully-fledged alternative to Christianity, with meaning and morality.

I am an ardent evolutionist and an ex-Christian, but I must admit that in this one complaint the literalists [ie a person like me] are absolutely right.

Evolution is a religion. This was true of evolution in the beginning and it is true of evolution still today. Evolution came into being as a kind of secular ideology, an explicit substitute for Christianity.'

If evolution were true, transitional forms in the fossil record should be commonplace. Yet the late Dr Stephen J Gould, an evolutionist, wrote: 'The absence of fossil evidence for intermediary stages between major transitions in organic design, indeed our inability, even in our imagination to construct intermediates, has been a persistent and nagging problem for evolution.'

To evolve from a dinosaur to a bird, as evolutionists believe, requires an increase in DNA information. Mutations and natural selection produce changes, but never produce an increase in DNA information, which means it cannot happen.

Please show me one example of an animal, which changed into a different kind by way of an increase in DNA information?

Changes in a species do not mean that they can change in kind.

A fresh water crocodile adapting to live in salt water is certainly a change, but without an increase in DNA information, which means that they will remain crocodiles, although two different species.

And 'Yes', humans are special when compared to God's other creations. Consider the non-physical aspects between man and animals: If chimps or baboons 'evolved' into humans, how and when did 'grunting' develop into 6 000 languages that exist today?

Science is at a loss at to the concept of language. Why do only humans have police, courts and jails? Instead of being executed, lions are praised for their predatory skills and even protected by law. Why is rape/theft wrong only for humans?

When a dolphin eats its young, are we going to prosecute it for murder? Explain why only humans are self-conscious?

Ever seen any animal looking at a portrait, appreciating its beauty? Science proved that animals cannot think abstractly, unlike us. Ever seen an animal smile or laugh? Why do only humans understand principles like morality, honesty, love, right/wrong etc. and even eternity/time?

God determined principles, not man. As God placed His image in man, only man is capable of comprehending and practising these eternal principles. The abstract side of man compared with animals is an unbridgeable gap that evolutionary processes cannot explain.

It makes me realise just why the Bible states that God made man in His image. Compare this with Mr Claassen's evolutionist view of man: You are a cosmic mindless accident, existing by chance, without purpose and no different in value from the manure you are to become.

Wessel Smith, Pretoria
