Dear Editor,
One of the developments I am keenly tracking is that coming out of the Ministry of Finance post the Trevor Manuel era. Without a doubt one of President Jacob Zuma's key appointments to ministerial level is Pravin Gordhan, a former SARS Commissioner.
Pravin Gordhan is a man of quiet deportment, who is a true grafter. He seeks no spotlights for himself and understands working as part of the collective (a hallowed principle within the ANC).
You don't have to look further than his recent past with SARS where he turned a once lagging and amorphous institution to one of the best run state department in less than 10 years.
The Gordhinian principle, named after the man himself, is that of quiet disposition with a focus on prudence, efficiency and transparency. Gone are the heady heydays of tax consultants making neat profits from overstating their clients' expense in a bid to cheat the state of revenue for its massive expansive programmes. Tax evaders loathed the man as much as they respected his technological tax innovations.
Now as principal implementer of government policies on finance, Gordhan has once again, been thrust to the forefront of simplifying the economy and creating new jobs (500 000-odd a year for the next five years) for all South Africans. I am quietly optimistic that Gordhan would rise to these challenges and fulfil, maybe even surpass his mandate.
The bull and bears are still sussing Gordhan out, but I know ocne the bull notices Gordhan's taunting red handkerchief, they would come storming. Ladies and gentleman, I would like us all to give Pravin Gordhan a chance...the tides are going to turn, soon!
