Dear Editor,
Corruption comes in various disguises. Trying to get a booking for a driver's or learner's licence is virtually impossible.
You have to call the call centre number which is a national number. When and if you do get through you are told without fail that there are no bookings available. There is no form of waiting list, you have to continue calling on a daily basis. I believe this can take months.
If you do a Google search you come across an online booking service that guarantees you a booking within three days at a cost R299. Well I have to ask myself how they manage to get these bookings so easily. Are these people who work for the licence department running a sideline business? Who is actually making the money here? Should people be setting up profitable businesses at the expense of the tax payer?
When you do get this booking you still have to go through the whole nasty process of going to the test station within three days to pay the booking fee (over and above the R299 fee) to secure your booking.
All this has to be done during working hours. You then have to take the time off to take the person doing the licence to the licence centre. Then there are the percentage that have to "fail" so that you have to go through the whole cost and process again.
What a rip off! And then again there are all these illegal drivers on the road who have bought their licences; it makes you wonder what the bigger evil is!
