'Independence for W Cape?'

17 July 2009, 07:43 - Paul

Dear Editor,

I have just returned from a five-day stay over in Cape Town and was pretty impressed with how well the Western Cape has been governed.

The streets are clean, police are visible and one generally gets the impression that the city is more functional than provinces governed by the ANC.

The thought that immediately crossed my mind was that the Western Cape should seek independence from the rest of ANC controlled South Africa. Why not let the ANC have the rest of South Africa and let the DA have the Western Cape as another country with its own identity?

Surely the government shouldn't have an issue with such an arrangement as there is a clear difference in values and principles between the Western Cape and the other provinces.

This will also allow people that support law and order and good governance to move to a country that suites these values and the people that prefer to support an ANC type governance style to live in a country suitable to their values. One must also remember that none of the main ethnic groups that make up the ANC are from the Western Cape anyway ie Xhosas, Zulus, Sothos or Tswanas.

That way the ANC, IFP, Communist party etc could exist in their own "democracy" while DA, ID etc supporters would have an opportunity to immigrate to the newly formed country in the form of the Western Cape.

I'm sure that the ANC would welcome such a move as it would give them an opportunity to build a country of their own where people of similar values live.

I would pack my bags and "immigrate" to this new Western Cape country without hesitation and start again.

In fact, I'd urge the people of the Western Cape to fight for independence. The handful of ANC supporters living in the Western Cape could also leave for a country governed by a party of their choice. It must be as difficult for them to live under a DA controlled province as it is for me to live under an ANC controlled province.
