Just 'lunatics and alcohol?'

03 September 2008, 07:27

Dear Editor,

I would like to comment about a story that was reported in some news sectors about the treatment of a woman at the Coca Cola park last Saturday during a rugby match.

This story was about a black lady who was discriminated against because she came to watch a rugby match. The story did not make headlines and I suppose this affirms my view that our news coverage is still very much biased.

When I heard this I asked myself what would have been the reaction had the same thing happened to a white person during a soccer match. I can guarantee you that there would have been an uproar, the story would have made international news and it would have cast a shadow of doubt on people visiting during the soccer World Cup.

Some people have blamed this on a few lunatics and alcohol. I didn't even know that alcohol is allowed during rugby games. This surprises me because we are not allowed to consume alcohol during soccer matches. What does this imply? You be the judge!

It is absolute nonsense to blame this on alcohol. What's worse is that none of the passerbys did anything about this.

These developments are obviously worrying because we are trying to build a rainbow nation here but if we continue to make the other side feel alienated, what do you think the reaction is going to be eventually? When are we going to come to point were south Africa belongs to all who live in it regardless of race, colour or creed.

Mapentsele

Try again. You lost the plot.

It is not us vs them, black vs white and until we can progress from that archaic mind set we will never be able to progress as a country that is truly alive with possibility.  Read more...
