Dear Editor,
It is also a well known fact that police are also underpaid. Will it not make sense to improve their salaries? This is no guarantee that this will improve performance from their site.
Improving their salaries must, of course, go with implementing some kind of penalty if they don't do their job properly. The idea should be to get rid/punish the dead woods.
I still can't understand how any country can pride itself of having a member of police who is Jackie Selebi's size. If you go around Pretoria and Johannesburg you will be shocked at the kind of police that you come across. It's shocking.
These guys spend most of their times eating pap and meat that they buy and braai on the streets. A person is on duty but he will wait two hours to queue in order to buy meat, wait for his turn to braai, eat and of course "down" everything with a can of beer.
How disgusting. Hardly a year in a police force a person is fat and he/she and cannot run. How do you keep such people in a police force?
For me it is simple, the minister of security should set a certain weight that members of a security forces should maintain. Of course the weight should be in line with a person's age and height.
They don't need an incentive for this, keeping fit goes with being a policeman/woman. They will not only be doing us a favour by keeping fit, it is for their own good. They need to train like soldiers for are about to be deployed in a war zone.
