Swiping ourselves into debt

19 November 2009, 14:04 - Leigh

Dear Editor,

I received a store card from Foschini in the post the other day, and know quite a few people who have also recently randomly received Mr Price cards, Woolworths cards etc without applying for them.

I called Foschini and spoke to an 'Elizabeth' who rudely told me she did not want a speech when I told her that millions of South Africans are living in debt and poverty and by sending these cards out these stores are making our economic situation so much worse by inviting people to get into even more debt which they will not be able to repay!

How are stores allowed to do this? She says if I don’t want the card I must simply cut it up. Well its weeks before Christmas and for millions of people living in debt a store card offering you thousands to spend is extremely inviting!

Why are South African consumers not being protected against this crap?! Yes, I am not going to use the card and will cut it up but there are so many people out there who will jump at it and just get into deeper debt than they are already in.

I think it is nothing short of disgusting that they are allowed to do this and are buying our information from other companies and getting people into trouble!

Leigh
