Dear Editor,
This past Saturday at 16:40, I left my house in Table View, Cape Town, to pick my girlfriend up from work in the CBD of Cape Town.
I joined up with Marine Drive at Sunningdale and after a couple of kilometres was behind a police vehicle. The said vehicle was towing a very large horse box with two horses onboard.
What struck me as odd was the fact that the police officer who drove the vehicle was driving in the right hand line and had no intentions to move over to the left line. In actual fact the gentleman proceeded to drive at very high speed, swerving from left to right as he made his way through traffic that was keeping at the speed limit which is for most part of Marine drive, until you join up with Tablebay Boulevard, 60km/h.
At one point I tried to catch up with the vehicle, which I was able to do as we past Paarden Island Industria and as I moved in alongside the car, we were doing a 110 km/h. Now remember, this guy is towing a horse box with two horses onboard.
Again I lost him through traffic and caught up to him as we entered town at Buitengracht.
Fortunately we caught the robot at a red so we had to stop and I was able to move in on the vehicle's right-hand side and came to a standstill right next to him. I was burning to see who drove this vehicle and to my surprise I found four police officers inside the vehicle. Except for the driver, all three were busy on their cellphones and by the look of things none had any concern with the fact that they were transporting live animals.
As I drove behind this maniac, I thought to myself, is he not bothered with the public witnessing this, does he not worry about the welfare of the two horses he's transporting, has he ever transported live animals? And this from a person, employed by the SAPD, who is supposed to safeguard human life.
I'm still lost for words.
Brian
