Dear Editor,
BBC reports that the Tanzanian high commissioner to South Africa was beaten unconscious by armed robbers at his own farewell dinner in Pretoria.
The envoy, Emmanuel Mwambulukutu, is said to be in a serious but stable condition in hospital. Six other people were also taken to hospital after the attack, including the ambassador's wife. Some guests were threatened with rape.
The envoy told the robbers at one point: "Gentlemen, God bless you." They are said to have replied: "We don't care for God. Let's stab these dogs."
My plea is that this level of hate and callousness must be addressed in 2008 by drilling in on the true uncomfortable cases. If criminals are immigrating, stop it. If there is an upsurge of frustration and hatred, make it the number one priority. If morality and the law has become a joke, lead by example.
We cannot afford to be lead by a group of people who disregard the law so much that they would vote in those who are facing serious charges. If we don't have the law and true democracy, then we have nothing.
Pieter Joubert,
Pretoria
