Dear Editor,
Roughly 18 months ago, I reported the problem of continued dropped calls and general bad cellphone reception to my service provider, Vodacom. I was quite surprised when I received a call back within an hour of someone to obtain more details of the problem and the location.
In the next few weeks I had two more calls from them telling me that the problem was that the towers in the general area could not cover a small stretch where I lived, but that a new tower has been commissioned.
In my cynical attitude, I just thought "yeah, yeah whatever" and resigned myself to the fact that I will have bad reception for time to come.
About six months later I accepted a job offer in Dubai and in the last year that I have been here, I received quite a few text messages to remind me that Vodacom was still working on the problem.
Last week I got another text message - this time proudly stating that there is a new tower active in the area and inviting me to report any problems with it.
Why am I telling you this? We have grown so used to poor service in our country that we actually forget that there are glimmers of hope and that companies like Vodacom actually do care.
On this, my dear fellow Safricans, we have no idea what bad poor service is when compared to other parts of the world...
Thank you, Vodacom. I have renewed hope that our awesome country will get strong again!
Louis
