Dear Editor,
I would like to see an in depth probe into the sublime hypocrisy of taking Walmart to the competition board again.
SA has recently got into bed with the BRIC countries, at least two of which have appalling human rights records. Thus they suppress unions, work labour long hours in terrible conditions to produce goods with which SA, with its restrictive labour laws, cannot compete.
In other words, the very alliance is with countries which can easily compete with SA in our domestic markets.
So why insist that Walmart should buy locally to safeguard domestic jobs when the BRICS agreement can clearly be seen to encourage the very matters which have elicited such wrath (crocodile tears)?
We really cannot challenge Walmart, or any other, for offering the consumer more competitive goods.
Time to wake up.
Jeffrey Hawkes
