Dear Editor,
Throughout recorded history, there is strong evidence suggesting that nations survive, prosper and succeed because of credible, insightful, thoughtful and selfless leadership. Prior to the dawn of democracy in this country, there was a lot of scepticism surrounding the future of South Africa.
There was fear that this country will turn into a battle war zone were whites would be driven out of the country through the barrel of a gun by bitter black South Africans. Tens of thousands of white South Africans left the country but many more millions patriotic white South Africans remained.
We all know what happened. There was no civil war, we held our first peaceful democratic elections in 1994, a rainbow nation was born and the country moved on to achieve what was unimaginable. This did not just miraculously happen, the leadership (Nelson Mandela, FW de Klerk, etc) of that time, provided much needed guidance and direction. They steered the ship through stormy seas and it is for this reason that things turned out the way they did. It could have been worse.
The point I am trying to put across is that nations thrive or perish because of their leaders.
Fast forward to 2009. Let us look at the calibre of our current leadership, from the president and his cabinet, the opposition party leadership, and the youth leadership. Can we as a nation confidently entrust these individuals with the hope and future of our beloved country?
And please save me the argument about these individuals having been democratically elected into power by the people. We all know that South Africans still vote along colour lines and sympathetically for a party and not individuals. Fathom this, what chance do you think our current president would have had if he contested the elections under DA, Cope, IFP? Exactly my point!
There is an outcry for accountable, credible, disciplined, thoughtful, insightful and selfless leadership; Leadership that genuinely cares for the needs of the people. I hope someone up there is listening.
