Dear Editor,
When the news broke that Terror Lekota, Mbazima Shilowa, Mluleki George and others were going to form the Congress of the People, this country saw one of the biggest media scrambles ever since the release of Nelson Mandela in 1990.
Stories about Cope became a top story in each and every newspaper, every radio station even television stations.
I vividly recall when Cope was first introduced at the Primedia studios, almost everybody was trying to access Radio 702 for live coverage even if they knew they can't receive the signal.
Car owners had to park on the roadsides just to get a clear signal and follow word to word that the party leader Terror Lakota was going to say.
We all didn't believe it. Was the ANC really going to be toppled upon after all these years in existence and after 15 years as a ruling party in South Africa?
The elections were drawing to a close and Cope leaders were calling on all South Africans to change the country's political landscape in order to preserve democratic values, Cope leaders even smelled a two third majority judging from the coverage and the type of charisma this party created
Since the news of Cope being formed last year October, the party had been receiving a lot of coverage from every media house.
A piece covered by the Independent Newspapers last year: "They also said they were unhappy that, with an election only six months away, it seemed that the national broadcaster was promoting the breakaway Shikota party".
The 2009 elections came and went. Cope voted by many as one of the biggest opposition parties in the country, sending DA leaders and other opposition parties to a long chain smoking frenzy.
That's the last time I heard about the Congress of The People. They moved from a highly-covered political party in the land down to non-existence.
Call it a complete Cope media blackout. People don't even talk about Cope anymore. Media houses have since almost totally ignored its existence.
With all that said and done, questions still remain, why is the media not telling South Africans the Cope story any more?
