A WITNESS headline last weekend stated that PMB got just a drop (of rain); 26,45 mm in total.
According to Wikipedia, Maritzburg has 70 000 homes. For simplicity, let’s assume that on average they have a roof area of 200 m2. That would fill one 5 000-litre tank for each home, enough for one week at least. Doing the maths, it comes to 37 megalitres, or 16% of Midmar in just one weekend; bit more than a drop, I would say.
The 126 mm of rain that fell on Durban was enough water to fill several Midmar dams.
It’s time the residents of KZN stopped whingeing about water, saving a few teaspoons while shaving or brushing their teeth, and took responsibility for saving this manna that falls from heaven; there’s more than enough, even in the drought years, for the people living in cities and towns.
