SAA is the common denominator

20 May 2016, 09:32  - Joyce.Jagaroo

IF the truth be told, SAA seems to be the common denominator in the woes facing the Finance ministry.

Last year, as a result of the refusal to approve additional funding for the ailing airline, then Finance minister Nhlanhla Nene got the chop, and a novice took over the position, however briefly.

Then, a few weeks ago, President Jacob Zuma visited the airline’s offices and assured all staff that all was well with the airline, and that the entity would never be sold.

Now, disagreement with Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan over the airline, a need to inject more funds, the pending R4 billion presidential jet and allegations of the formation of a rogue unit within the tax hierarchy, has again caused havoc in that ministry, with the Hawks being summoned to arrest Gordhan.

The resultant knock-on effect on the rand once again puts the country closer to junk status, and only the president can restore confidence in the markets.
