‘To hell with the citizens’

29 April 2016, 09:22  - Karishma.Rampersadh

I HAVE noticed that the Msunduzi Municipality is painting the new parking bays in Raisethorpe at a vigorous pace, but the road markings that are faded are not given priority.

Well, I suppose that the safety of our motorists is unimportant if there is money to be made from charging for parking. Pleas by the business community for council to stop this money-making scheme which will negatively affect their trade have fallen on deaf ears.

In previous reports, the municipality stated that this strategy is essential to its traffic management policy. This is hogwash — our people are not so naïve to believe you.

This is a joint business venture with your profiteering partner. The ultimate goal is just to make money and your attitude is to hell with the citizens and how it affects their pockets and their lives. Very simply, you are using financially struggling people as your cash cow without any conscience whatsoever.

It is absolutely ridiculous to charge for parking at the Raisethorpe Mosque where worshippers come to offer their prayers. Furthermore, no consideration has been given to the parents who drive to the Raisethorpe Secondary School and Maritzburg Muslim School for Girls to leave and fetch their children. As a result of the parking bays, Dr Chota Motala Road has been narrowed down to one lane in some places which is already impacting on the smooth flow of traffic.

We are living in tough economic times and need to save every cent. I suggest that we make use of free parking in adjacent streets and walk to the shops. Make use of free parking at Sadtu Square in Lahore Road (I hope and pray that council does not start charging here too) and use of off-road parking available in front of some businesses. Walking is good exercise and you will be able to meet and greet old friends.

This is not traffic management but just another ploy to fill the city’s coffers and to impoverish its already overburdened citizens.
