NOW that we are deep in the throes of one of the most devastating droughts to hit South Africa and more especially KZN, our local municipality again lays the blame on us the users for not “ doing enough” to save water.
To our water and sanitation manager, why did he or she wait for so long to implement water-saving measures?
Moreover, why did he or she wait until this season to try suddenly to “educate” the public on how to save water and on how dire our water situation really is?
Surely the powers that be could have foreseen that we were heading for trouble at least five years ago?
Why was this critical situation not addressed then?
While my family and I do our bit to save water, what irks me the most is the amount of water that is wasted through burst pipes and leaks (some have been leaking for months and even years), and yet the relevant department does nothing about them.
What irks me even further is the blatant waste of water that I witness on a daily basis at the taps that are left open for almost 24 hours a day.
Surely the municipality can put in measures to restrict the amount of water that is been wasted?
Or is it afraid to act due to fear of losing the local votes?
Sorry Msunduzi Municipality and our department of water, but the proverbial buck stops with you!
