LIBERAL AS SUPPOSE TO WHAT??
I am very often accused of being too liberal. (Fair accusation.) Because you know what; I am very liberally inclined. The people in history I look up to would be evident to that fact, people Mandela, Oliver Tambo, Martin L King Junior, Gandhi, etc. I often ask this question (and I apologise for my ignorance on this), if I am not liberal what should I be?
I am a strong believer that everybody is equal, albeit the riches person or the poorest person anywhere in the world, we are all equal. Therefore I respect you as my brother and / or sister, irrespective of your race, culture religion (even if you do not follow any religion, I respect your election not to do so). So dear reader, I need your help: I know this makes me liberal (sometime to the extreme), but if not liberal what should I be?
People who accuse me of being liberal, sometimes fail to substantiate their argument that I am wrong in my beliefs. When John Locke, the 17 century philosopher, who I might add is also widely credited with the title of the father of liberalism, argued that every man has a natural right to life, liberty and property according to the social contract and that no government should violate these rights, was he wrong? I believe that if everybody respect these rights, no one will take the life of another, no one will illegally take the property of another, so again I ask, am I wrong to live my life in accordance to these liberal ideals? If wrong; according to which ideals should I live my life?
I do not want to bore you with a long article, which is already summarized by its title. I do however invite you to comment on why liberalism is wrong? In that, you can teach me, as for now, I surmise that liberalism (to me) is the only way to live. So I invite you to answer this simple question: LIBERALISM, AS SUPPOSE TO WHAT??? I thank you in advance.
