God - the great designer - to know her mind is claimed to be unachievable. He is all-knowing, all- powerful and ever-present. She is more complex than anything in the history of everything. She’s full of intricate schemes, forever throwing us simple minded beings into a whirlwind of confusion. Being one of the preconceived answers to life’s biggest questions, this infinitely complex being, raises more questions than the answers she provides. Who designed the designer? Why does something apparently divine, possess such feeble and shallow human qualities? Why is there so much ambiguity in his messages? Why is its presence so elusive?
Complexity is an achievement, a result of something happening. Complexity cannot be inherently present, it must occur as a consequence otherwise it will require an explanation as to how it aroused. Our world appears very complex when observed directly, but science tells us this was not always the case. In the beginning, the universe was infinitely small, infinitely dense and infinitely hot. This single point of infinite nothing, expanded and the various forces and fields took over, decaying energy into the basic elements of hydrogen and helium. These simple elements when subjected to gravity gradually accumulated into the first stars of our universe. There was light, and over time these stars burned with splendid luminosity and died in cataclysmic explosions. Supernovas as they are known, not only provide more building blocks for new stars, they also create the more complex elements we find gracefully laid out in the periodic table. These tremendous explosions radiated matter to many corners of the universe. Gravity immediately grasped these more complex elements and drew them together forming the vast array of different planets, moons, asteroids and other space dwelling bodies. Over time on at least one of these bodies, something almost miraculous occurred. Elements reacted chemically to form complex molecules. Molecules reacted to form simple proteins. In time these proteins reacted further to form more complex proteins such as RNA and eventually gave birth to the enigma that is DNA. The earliest life forms themselves were simple creatures, single-celled and self-duplicating. In time these cells formed simple associations with one another. Naturally driven to exist for longer periods, while adapting to the various environments, these associations formed multi-celled life forms. As time passed these life forms grew and changed. Consistently evolving to their inconsistent environments, sometimes even altering the environment to suit themselves. Some of these life forms grew into magnificent trees, some became flying birds, and some of these transformed into hairless primates with the power of gods in their minds - full of schemes and ideas.
Life has achieved a certain complexity. The human brain remains the most complex object discovered in the entire universe. Spears, shields, farming, livestock, adornments, books, art, electricity, combustion engines, computers, mobile-phones, skyscrapers, atomic energy, aeroplanes, satellites, rocket ships, mars rovers and many more incredible things have been achieved via the conduit of the human mind. Humanity has exploited natural laws and forces for as long as we could. We have come a long way from our point of nothing, and I believe we have an even longer way to go yet. What this represents for me, is a clear flow. An elegant transition. From the basic singularity that spawned our existence, to the complicated stories we imagine in our minds. I have explained in my previous post, how I feel about life being a stupid design. http://www.news24.com/MyNews24/Life-A-Stupid-Design-20120514-2
I feel the opposite is true when viewed through the objective lens of science. Life appears to be an elegant phenomenon. An ever enduring consequence, which has undergone a graceful and challenging journey to finally awaken and observe the world we live. An infinitely complex, scheming, god would represent an end state, rather than a beginning. I see complexity as something that is derived from simplicity. The universe, it appears, follows a trend towards complexity. Starting out as a simple singularity, and manifesting in objects as complex as the human mind.
