A recent flurry of activity hit Face book last week when a certain magazine that caters to teenagers in search of the right colour lipstick with shoes to match, went out on a limb and decided to publish something a little bit more substantial.
The article in question was :
"is ( yes a small i this is not a typo) GENETICALLY MODIFIED FOOD THE monster ( in red italic) we think it is?"
This was followed by what the magazine decided we should all think about this subject, so you don't have to think for yourself at all, because they are telling you. The by line was :
"The short answer is no. The long answer? No, not at all. (double negative for emphasis here please note) In fact, the much bigger question is why there is so much hysteria ( crazy women with PMS I presume, good put down line here) surrounding the subject."
Well, within a short space of time the letters to the editor was flooded with information as to why exactly all these "hysterical " people are against GMO foods. Hysterical people are not intelligent, educated, informed or even adults who are capable of doing their own research and reaching their own conclusions. Why, oh why send letters of disagreement when you have already been TOLD! "No, not at all."
The magazine chose not to publish these letters which in short order would have completely demolished every argument made, arguments that were presented to the South Africa reader as to what they should think, as opposed to an in depth article giving the facts. So here are a few facts that readers of this magazine might have missed along the way just to clear things up a bit.
1. Patenting of seeds.
A handful of companies around the world have decided in their quest for corporate control of the whole food system, to genetically engineer seeds, plants and trees ( they are coming for your DNA next!) which will give them the legal right to have total ownership on all food sources. (and your kids soon if you are not careful!)
What this means is this. Long gone will be the day that you can take the seeds from your vegetables and plant them for the next season. No! You will be guilty of theft due to patenting laws. So you will be forced every year to buy seeds from said number of companies. Think Mielies, tomatoes, potatoes, carrots, beans, peas soy, etc. This will also go for that elephant ear you propagated, and that fern and that rose bush, as well as those bananas trees in your back yard, the avocado pear pip your child has impaled with matches and that is sprouting roots into the beer mug! The little criminal could even go to jail! Everything will be owned and controlled by these companies. Organic seeds will be outlawed.
Many farmers in the USA have been arrested for producing their own seed, some have lost their farms, others have been sued by these companies when these genetically modified plants cross pollinate with their own and the company sues THEM for breaching patenting laws. (yeah I know, seems they all lost they minds)
In India many farmers who always used to stock their own seed are now prevented from doing so, and after bad seasons with crop failures leading to no or little income, have been forced to buy more seed from these companies. Many have gone bankrupt. Many have committed suicide.
In a world where food security is becoming imperative, this practise of patenting food has contributed towards an increase in costs for the farmer and in turn, to you the consumer What is more, Wall Street and the gambling investors now invest in GMO companies as a good bet. They know the cost is going to go up and there will be a food shortage, so they are betting on a good return for their buck!
For a very good explanation on all of this see:
"Open Seeds: Biopiracy and the Patenting of Life - As the world begins to digest the implications of intellectual property for online censorship, another IP issue threatens an even more fundamental part of our daily lives: our food supply. Backed by legal precedent and armed with seemingly inexhaustible lobbying funds, a handful of multinationals are attempting to use patents on life itself to monopolize the biosphere."
2. The insecticides used on GMOs are highly poisonous. Farmers using GMO seeds are also forced to use these chemicals which, I am sure you have figured out by now, they have to buy from the seed company. These poisons have permeated the plants and this is passed onto the consumer.
Such farming practises and poisons have decimated Argentina, once a major beef producing country, now replaced by a GMO industry where :
" Agrochemicals Linked To Higher Cancer, Birth Defect Rates In Some Argentine Provinces: Report" see-
This is only one example. Tests done by independent scientists, not the ones our "Lipstick With Matching Shoes" magazine spoke to obviously, and scientists not affiliated with any GMO company, found that mice fed with GMO foods develop infertility, shorter life spans and cancerous tumours.
Now consider that 75% of South African Maize is GMO. Then take a look at the supermarket shelves and see just how many products contain Maize. And also consider that many animals are also fed GMO feed: cows, pigs, chicken. .... I will leave you with that thought for a while.
3. Labels: Despite worldwide public demand that all food products that are GMO must be labelled, so that at least you know what you are buying and as an adult ( not hysterical mind you) you can actually choose if you want to buy the stuff or not, these companies have refused to do so. They have gone to great lengths and expense to prevent legislation of any kind that will force them to label their products. They even claim that such labels will increase the cost of the product, however they seem to have no problem changing the print on the packaging when doing a promotion for a competition or advertising that there is a toy inside to entice your child to nag you to death until you buy the dang thing! see:
GMO Labelling in Washington with Initiative 522
".. the food industry and purveyors have put millions of dollars into fighting the initiative..."
All of the above is not "hysteria," all of the above is informed , educated and adult, as opposed to what the "Lipstick With Matching Shoes" editorial tells you, the reader: That the answer is No! GMO is not a monster and all these people have entrenched opinions, no tolerance for other ways of thinking and suffer from a seductive confirmation bias! ( a convoluted diatribe if ever I heard one!)
Really? Now consider this:

Los Angels set to be the Largest GMO-Free Zone in the US
So the next time you buy your "Lipstick With Matching Shoes,"magazine, as you flip through to find out what your zodiac sign says, beware of all articles not related to fashion, and do your own research.
