Local author shocks and appals!

22 July 2014, 13:34

I recently bought a copy of the book, The Transkei Run by local author Michael Taljaard for my bookclub, the Kalahari Golden Girls.

I had seen the book advertised on the Penguin Books website and took this to be a sure sign that the book would be both entertaining and informative. As I prefer to go into a book without any preconceived ideas, I did not read the blurb on the back. This was my first mistake!

I dived in head-first, assuming I was about to read about an athletic event somewhere east of the Kei River (I myself having been a keen long distance runner in my hayday) only to discover that the book is perhaps the filthiest thing I have ever read!

I am, even now, still shocked and appalled that such a thing could be published! The use and abuse of drugs and alcohol in the story is simply unacceptable in a country where such problems are rife! What are we teaching our children with literature such as this? The language is crude and vulgar and the sex scene is written in such gruesome detail that I found myself feeling physically ill!

In South Africa, where violence destroys families and lives, why should we subject ourselves to such outrageous, graphic violence such as that contained in this disgusting little book?

A mere glance at the author’s photo on the back of the book confirms that this work could only have come from a mind that is truly sick! The photograph of the author is in black and white, showing him with the demonic, smug little grin of a man unwittingly doing the devil’s work. I can conclude that this dreadful book and the horrible man who wrote it are nothing short of satanic! Please, stay away from it at all costs, and for goodness sake, keep it away from your children!

Like most people who watched Carte Blanche this Sunday, I was flabbergasted by the comments of Brigadier Sayers, who stated that there are no gang activities in Wentworth. That the four drive-by shootings that occurred on Christmas day were just part of general festive activities. Read more...
