@TrendsSA reported this on Twitter following overwhelming support for Oscar Pistrious who shot his girlfriend dead. I don't know if Oscar is getting this support because he is a celebrity, hero to some people or because he has no legs but one thing it has proven to me is that we are a nation of hypocrites.
Oscar's shooting comes just few days after the brutal murder and rape of Anene Booysen. We were all galvanized with anger. We wrote blogs, columns organized marches and blamed Jacob Zuma for violence against women and children. We made demands to the courts not to give those rapist bail and to lock them away and throw away the key.
Booysens murder was not the first case of a nation caught in anger and disgust over women and children abuse. There was also a case of jub-jub who was speed-racing and killed two children who were coming from school and left one brain damaged.
Like Booysen's case a nation was galvanized we demanded the courts not to treat Juj-Jub special because he is a celebrity and has money. Public opinion found him guilty the minute the death of those children was reported. Maybe we did this to Jub-jub because he is black, all over the world crime has a black face and its easy for people not to believe people with a lighter complexion are capable of killing and committing crime. Or maybe we did not feel sympathy for jub-jub because he is not a national hero with Gold Medals. But the bottom line is, both these people killed and both deserve the same public opinion and judgment.
Those who support him are busy saying they were not at the scene, they don't know what happened. Fact is, we were not there when Booysen was brutally murdered, we were not there when Jub-Jub ran over and killed those children.
Few of us witness the killings, rapes, car hijacks and all other forms of criminal activities. We are never there when all these things happen. But the victims serves as proof that such events occurred and it is up to us if we support the perpetrators so they can continue with their inhumane activities.
Why are we such hypocrites?
If we are really series about putting a stop to crime and violence in this country we as the public should show zero tolerance against anyone. We must not only do this when it comes to people we don't know their faces. A criminal is a criminal. There is never a good reason for someone to deprive another human being of their life.
I am not a court judge and I never studied law; However, I can not defend the indefensible. Oscar shot his girlfriend four times. He is not deaf,by the first shot I am sure his girlfriend screamed, shouted or made attempts to show Oscar that its not a burglar but her. City Press recently reported a bloodstained bat was found on the scene and Reeva's skull is reportedly crushed. To crush someone's skull you have to be very close to them. As close as Oscar was he still couldn't see that its not a burglar but his girlfriend who he knew for over four months.
Oscar's father told a Uk newspaper that his son acted on instinct because of the high levels of crimes in our country. I know there are high levels in our country but that does not give me the right to go on a shooting spree whenever I feel threatened. We as citizen have every right to complain about crime to the government but we can not blame the government for our own doings.
If you “love and support” Oscar at least acknowledge the fact that he killed the girl knowingly and also acknowledge that you're a hypocrite. It is until people like you change for us to see a decrease in Violent crimes in South Africa.
