I really don't believe minister Lulu Xingwana deserves the kind of redicule she is getting from South Africans. Before anyone bites my head off, let us look at what exactly happened. She was asked about the diverse causes of women abuse in South Africa and her answer was correct:: different cultures have different attitudes of men against women and children.
She then mentioned all cultures we have in South Africa of all races, not just Afrikaners. She spoke about cultures such as ukuthwala and many others. The reason comment about Afrikaners seem to be held high is not Lulu's fault. In fact it exposes the kind of media we have in South Africa.
Ofcourse, I understand the beef between Australians and South Africans, but we must also agree that it is not a feeling held by all South Africans. If you listen closely you'll realise that those who blame Lulu merely blame her for talking to Australian media. Thus, they are sorry Australians had to hear that we have problems in South Africa and may also affect the Australian view of those South Africans.
The fact that comment about Afrikaners seem to be held higher than comment about ukuthwala shows the deep seated racist attitude of our media. The fact is that we need to look at our various cultures in order to understand the scurge of abuse in Sout Africa and deal with it effectively.
How dare you call someone stupid? I couldn't believe my ears this morning when people call someone stupid on radio and even encouraged by the host. It is not good at all.
