Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela died on Thursday evening. Since the official announcement of his death by President Jacob Zuma, the world has been a hive of activity in celebration of his glorious and revolutionary life. The ANC, Mandela Family and the South African Government have been flooded with messages of condolences and tributes from all over the world.
It has also been reported that there will be more Heads of State at his funeral than there were at his inaugration in 1994. The ANC in a statement on the passing of Madiba captured his essence when it said:
"Our nation has lost a colossus, an epitome of humility, equality, justice, peace and the hope of millions, here and abroad."
Mandela is the product of history, he is a product of the ANC. Where it not because of this history his fate would have turned out differently. Because of the ANC he grew organically to the global iconic status he today enjoys uncontested. All the good he lives behind is the product of the ANC collective of members and leaders.
Others out of mischief and desperation would want to detach him from his roots, the ANC and its glorious and revolutionary history. These are those who wish they were the ANC, or that Madiba was not the ANC.
As it is, Mandela is the ANC and the ANC is Mandela - an immutable fact.
It therefore stands to reason that the burden of continuing with the Madiba Legacy lies on the shoulders of the ANC and the people of South Africa and the people of the world who stood by his side for the duration of the struggle of liberation and beyond.
In the hands of the ANC, the Mandela Legacy will live and thrive until the end of time. It is so because the Mandela Legacy is the ANC Legacy. In the words of the ANC:
"He passed the baton to the younger generation of his beautiful movement, the ANC, to carry on with the vision of bringing about an equal and just society. The ANC continues in this task as set forth by him and those of his generation, living and deceased. Indeed men and women such as Nelson Mandela...when they pass they leave a vision of a new and better life and the tools with wich to win and build it."
