While the world celebrates, mourns and re-enacts Madiba’s Long Walk to Freedom; it triggered a load of mixed emotions and stirred my heart to tears. I am sure like most South Africans, caught by surprise by the magnitude of his life and death; you can relate to this.
Some popular lyrics go like: You’ll never know what you’ve got/till you lose it! I really thought I knew who Madiba was until reality hit home, emerged right in front of my eyes; very revealing and humbling to my ignorance.
Never was there a man so celebrated by so many, in life and in death the world over; like Nelson Mandela! Madiba has touched and stirred so many lives across the Globe more than all world’s famous superstars and famous people, put together. His, is a book on life!
His epitaph reads: Herein rests a man, not just any man, but a true measure of a man, any man who dares come closer and take stock, will identify with the Human Legend; who rewrote the history of the world with the only page of his life. One of the very few men in the world, with all the colours of the rainbow shining at every turn
Mandela epitomized a true symbol of unity that forced world leaders, common people, rich, poor, young and old; to take a moment and reflect on true values of Freedom, Peace and Oneness! Madiba was Ubuntu personified, even Obama knows this…
Two men died apart and found themselves in Heaven, standing before the Lord. The Lord said to the first man: “Where are your scars, show me your wounds?” The first man proudly showed his scars and wounds to the Lord and He smiled and said: “Good servant!”
Then came the turn for the second man to show his wounds, but alas, lo and behold the man sadly replied: “I have no scars and wounds to show you, Lord.” The Lord leaned back and waxed angry and said to the man: “My friend, why hast thou no wounds and scars, were there no wars to fight in the world?”
The man did not answer.
I rest my pen and lay it down, for you to add your very thoughts on the life so richly lived, despite the pain and the dear price (including all the precious blood of the martyrs of our struggle) that shaped it…..What do you see?
I see a measure of a man….
