Maintaining Wooden windows and doors

This week saw me doing a lot of work on timber. I was speaking to Kgomotso who asked how to prevent wooden windows from rotting away. Repairs to wooden windows and sliding doors can be very costly as she found this week. I have said in a previous article that a little preventative maintenance can save a wad of cash in the future.

Maintaining wood on the outside of a house is very important because the elements will destroy it very quickly if you don't maintain them properly. Lets talk about the different wood treatments and their expected lifespans.

Traditionalist like oiling wood because it feeds the wood, allows it to breathe and keeps it looking good. Oiling wood is something that needs to be done regularly to ensure the wood stays protected. A suggeted period between oiling should be no more than 2 years but annually wood be better. A quick rubdown with some turps will get your window frame prepared for some oil. 

There are different types of varnish available. Varnish if left untreated for long periods will flake, peel and crack. The various products have life spans between 3 and 10 years for the top of the range poly urethane products. The downside of varnish is that it is more labour intensive doing another coat, Sanding is essential before applying a maintenance coat.

It is a personal choice whether to use varnish or oil, are you willing to do regular maintenance or are you the kind of person that would rather cover it up and forget it for as long as possible.

A 5l tin of varnish or oil can start at about R 300 depending on your source and brand. Replacing a frame can start at R 2000.00. A little maintenance can prevent the need for replacement.
