“I need to get back to exercising and eating healthy” a colleague tells me. I don’t know how many times they’ve tried the ‘eating healthy” thing, I’m a repeat offender on many such things so I should be last to talk, but then, I cherish second chances, the anticipation of starting something afresh, taking another crack at it, the hope of finally succeeding where once I dismally failed.
The most joy you’ll get out of life is in all the in-between stuff, the suspense of not knowing whether or not you’ll be able to push yourself that extra mile, whether you’d have enough discipline, focus and determination to overcome all negative thoughts and succeed with your short-term and long-term goals, the sweet smell of clutching victory from defeat, and the courage that comes from picking yourself up by keeping on keeping on.
A most pleasant surprise came my way recently, depressed through not being able to go on my beloved outdoor jogs due to injury, I discovered that the layoff, instead of making me more unfit, had actually reinvigorated me, I was like a beast up those hills, the smell of my surroundings taking on a stronger intensity with each stride and precious deep breath.
We fall only to rise, and we fall again, and before we know it the holiday season has arrived beckoning us to do better than the year before, to do more than just talk, and here is my hope this year: that more people would be moved to act, to move from the comfort in their chapels, synagogues, cathedrals and mosques and make a solid difference to someone in need, the guy at the gas station, the lady and man seeking employment who cannot afford long, lazy lunches sitting on tables groaning under the weight of all kinds of foods, people who do not have the luxury of sipping cocktails at the coast while their pets and kids frolic merrily on the sand, or enjoy long massages at Game Reserves blessed with the scenery of golden African sunsets and sunrises, boat cruises with the birds chirp chirping in the trees. Take time offline, cook an extra pot, give to the needy, make a difference.
God Bless and early Happy Holidays to you and Loved Ones.
