Mamphela Ramphele, A Poem

02 February 2014, 10:13

May I have your attention please!” Shouted the old, short, academic woman.

African sons and daughters you need a change, you need a new leader

May I commit myself and lead you to a new era, a newer South Africa

People have fought and died for this freedom, it’s time we claim it back

Hani, my ex, Biko and many more, we owe it up to them to build and make this country work.

Excuses, lack of delivery and finger pointing are the order of the day and the masses are forgotten

Let us take back this country and lead it away from the greedy and corrupt.

Escape from your capturers and let’s start a brand new journey with a brand new brand.

Rumors of her arrival spread and reporters gathered hungry for fresh news

A fresh and new vision, a new direction is born. Murmured the undecided and the disgruntled

Many a people gathered willing to embark on the journey of change and prosperity.

People looking for a new home to settle, with the thirst to build a prosperous country.

Hope kept them going for a while but just fizzled out like a liquid losing its effervescence.

Elsewhere in the corridors the short, old academic was looking for a home herself

Leaving those who supported her confused not only by her name but her actions

Everyone just watched with disbelief as she jumped ship boarded the chariot and waved her dream goodbye.
