Mandela's moving send off

15 December 2013, 13:36

News24 Users share their thoughts on the final goodbye to Nelson Mandela. Read what they had to say about the funeral in Qunu.

When l saw the Coffin going down l was saddened. l wish we will be at peace after all.
MZ Qunta

Hiding the lowering of the coffin I don't get that why thy did that? Although I know from there was the lowering the coffin down to the base of the grave?
Allen Makholly

Part of the funeral that got me choked was Ahmed Kathrada's forlorn tribute to Madiba. He mentioned how he has no one to turn to now, as he considered Walter Sisulu as his father and Madiba as his brother.
What a poignant end to his speech. Something tells me he's also just waiting to call it a day and join the A team of the ANC up in Heaven.
Sefiso Hlongwane

Ahmed Kathrada's speech. It ripped my heart in pieces! I could feel his pain. I think the entire world could. Rest in peace Tata Madiba.

I was particularly moved by Ahmed Kathrada's speech. One could feel the sincerity in his almost quivering voice. That really got me teary-eyed. Rest in peace Mr. Mandela, you're such a great inspiration to the whole world.

A speech of King Mathanzima was so true about the way South African behaviour on Tuesday at the memorial services.
TK Mhlongo

The highlight of the funeral was Chief Mathanzima's tribute speech. That is how wise men educate the nation. When the casket went down, it was an automatic moment of silence with tears.
Mahlatsi Setati

Kathrada's speech brought my family and I too tears. Saying good-bye is hard...
As well has Graca, wiping her tears... Tore at my heart. My heart ache with and for her.

When Joyce Banda conveyed a message across
Gabriel Motlhale

Oh! I was deeply moved by Ahmed Kathrada's speech, oh nkosiyami that was emotional.
Ethel Magidela

Ahmad Kathrada's speech moved me when he spoke about the 1st time he met the late Tata Madiba; tall, healthy and strong. What he saw at his home after returning from hospital was this giant of a man, helpless and reduced to a shadow of his former self. Listening to him, got me so emotional...I tried holding back the tears but couldn't.
Mapule Mphaki

Sad day. To me the most touching moment was yesterday when the icon was transported from Waterkloof military base airports to Qunu. The background song 'Hamba kahle' made me to be emotional. Hamba kahle Qhawe.

The shaky voice of Ahmed Kathrada when he said:
"When Walter died I lost a father and now I have lost a brother. My life is in a void and I don't know who to turn to." - Ahmed Kathrada.
Made me cry.

The thing that touched me most was when his former prisoner who was arrested for 26yrs gave flash back of the memories he had with him.

It has been such a long and emotional week for me,but the most moving and what brought tears to my eyes was  Ahmed Kathrada's last words "when Sisulu died I lost a father, and now I have lost a brother,my life is in void who do I turn to"
Kele Tlhabano

Part where Graca was handed the SA flag by the President, she could not contain her tears! N when the plane left Gauteng for Qunu. I knew Tata was going home forever and never coming back!
Bontle Maloka

Ahmed Kathrada's speech made me cry.
Tate Makhubela

I enjoyed everything about the funeral but thought it would be better if everyone could see everything and nothing to be left private because Mr Mandela was apart of all our lives and he belonged to each and every South African. We aren't allowed to go view his grave in the future which I think is silly because a lot of us would want to go pay our respect and gratitude to him. I think its something many or all South Africans would want to do.
S Ballim

My moment most memorable at Tata's funeral was when Ahmed Kathrada did his tribute to our TATA...
"When Walter [Sisulu] died, I lost a father. When you died, I lost a brother. Now I don't know who to turn to,"
It came from his heart and was felt with him. He must remember that he can turn to GOD, because his 'father' and 'brother' are safe with HIM and awaits him with open arms ones day!!
Denise Stubbs

The speech by Mr. Kathrada was so sincere and so honest. Spending 26 years with Madiba in prison. Wow. The president of Malawi too.

The part that moved me has to be Ahmed Kathrada's speech. It brought me & my family to tears especially when he was holding back his. We were very emotional.

I was moved by the Chairperson of SADC and Her Excellency Malawi's President Banda's speech. She was on point and she's a great leader.
May Tata rest in peace.
