I am a 46-year-old male who grew up in the adjacent township to Manenberg called Hanover Park. I was exposed to gang violence on a daily basis from the age of 5 years old while living in the area.
In fact I witnessed a man's throat slit right in front of my home as I was playing at the gate. This was my neighbor who attacked his brother in law after discovering he had had an affair with his wife while he was in jail.
Don't remember if the victim died, I do remember him going straight back to jail and his children, my friends growing up without a Farther. Hence his eldest son followed suit soon after and ended up in jail some years later.
I remember walking to Manenberg with friends on many occasions and always being weary of the local gangsters as you could become a victim of this intolerant violence for no apparent reason, maybe you were just unfamiliar coming into their turf.
What I would like to say is that all of the social ills happening in places like Manenberg and Hanover Park have been going on for 50 years and maybe longer and what the DA government is doing now by being re-active after very many unnecessary deaths and relentless violence has all been done before to no avail.
These communities have to stand up for themselves and start changing attitudes towards themselves and others in order to prosper and go forward. This in my opinion may be the solution to breaking the cycle of degradation to improve their lives in order to prosper their future, especially that of the youth.
