Mini Skirt March - Should it have happened?

20 February 2012, 15:21

If we were living in an ideal world, this march would make sense. In fact, in an ideal world there would be no need for these sorts of actions as there would be no problem. However, fact is, this is not an ideal world, and we unfortunately need to adjust our behaviour to combat the animals that perpetrate these crimes. The mini skirt march has done absolutely nothing to combat this crime. In fact, it may have placed a few people in harm’s way as some of these animals may have taken notice of who were in those marches.

Before some of you get on your high horse and let me have a piece of your mind, take a minute to ponder through the following points:

·         How many of you own cars? How many of you have alarm systems, tracking devices, gear-locks and the like to protect your cars. In an ideal world you should be able to leave your cars doors wide open and the only action somebody would take is to close the door so as to protect your investment.

·         How many of you live in homes?  How many of you have burglar proofing, alarms, proximity beams and the like to protect your homes. In an ideal world you would be able to leave windows and doors wide open and not have to worry about unwanted intrusions.

·         How many of you own jewellery? How many of you keep your jewellery lying around or do you keep it in locked draws, safes and hiding places to keep them from thieving hands.

Here is the thing. We are willing to keep our material wealth under lock and key from prying eyes and thieving hands. Again I say, we are not living in an ideal world! The march would have been understood by the normal, sane human being, but the march was totally wasted on the animals that perpetrate the crimes that people were marching against.

Prevention being better than cure would mean that you lock away your valuables, burglar proof your homes, immobilise your car and protect the most valuable of people in our society from the sick animals that roam our streets. These guys do not come with warning labels on their foreheads so that you are able to avoid them.

When protesting against other forms of material crime, we do not walk around the place showing off our most valuable possessions stating that criminals are not allowed to take these. Why are we than willing to do just that when protesting against sexual crimes?

We are willing to understand that as much as we do not want to have the extra expense of protecting our material wealth, we do so because we believe that we cannot control the actions of the criminal element in our society, yet we are not willing to accept that as much as we should not have to deal with sexual predators, they are out there and we do need to take some safety precautions against the most heinous of crimes against our mothers and daughters.

What I am trying to say is that as much as you have the freedom to dress the way you like, sometimes you need to dress a little less provocatively so as to protect yourself. In a sense you are willing to do the same for your material wealth, why not do the same for your body. Material wealth can be replaced, your dignity?
