It's funny how you get sucked into the stupidity that religious discussions on news24 are. You say to yourself leave it alone, its probably a POE article anyway, yet you read and are dumbstruck. It's like a train crash, you really think you don't want to watch, but you end up watching anyway.
I read a few articles today and am in awe of the level of stupidity it must take to write something like No God, no consequences. Seriously I get you think morals come from the gods, I haven't quite worked out if you know that Mithraism predates Christianity and has pretty much the same basic storyline. As do many other older religions. So we really need to figure this out, If your God doesn't exist, where do morals come from?
Godless heathens like myself seem to have morals and I don't get them from a book by shephers and stoneage goat herders. My morals stem from a desire to live in peace with my neighbour and I sure as bears do a number two in the woods know that if I am shagging his wife or kids, that is not going to be at all possible, If I steal his stuff, kick his dog, kill his plants, we won't live in peaceful conditions. I think morals change dependant on your location, We don't stone our women when they have a little nookie on the side, we divorce the tarts. In some countries, mainly those ones with Sharia law, think we are wusses because we don't kill them.
MOrals from a book that don't think slavery is an issue? doesn't think making your daughter marry her rapist is a problem? doesn't hesitste to kill children for teasing a priest wrong? I think I'll stick with the morals that come from wanting to live in peace.
Now to the whole communism/atheism debate. Communism is not Atheism! Atheism is not Communism! Communism is a social experiment that went wrong, an ideology that wants no competition not from capitalism, facism, socialism or religion. All of the ideologies compete for power and communism demands no competition. Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot and all the other dictators that would take an age to mention were not Atheist because they were anti religion, they were anti religion because they brooked no competition for power.
Hitler was a Christian in good standing with the Holy See, His attacks on the jews, atheists and other religions were because his Holy Book described them as evil, His Padres and Bishops probably didn't help much. Do we blame his religion for his megalomania? I think not, but it sure didn't help.
Can we blame Pol Pots Atheism for his megalomania? Lets explore this? Was it because he considered the Pope and other influences as an evil or because he wanted no competition for the adoration of the masses? Stalin? Chairman Mao?
To quote Frank Zappa: ?"There is more stupidity than hydrogen in the universe, and it has a longer shelf life."
